Failure – A Sign You Should Quit?

Reading time: 2 – 2 minutes

How many times did you fail this week?  If you aren’t failing, maybe you aren’t tackling big enough problems!  Failure is not a sign you should quit, only a chance for you to get back up and try again.  Get creative!  Don’t let failure keep you down!

Thomas Edison is famous for his invention of the light bulb and often cited as an example of the “don’t give up” principle in action.  I love candles, but I am sure am glad he persisted to invent a working light bulb!  Here are a few of his famous words:

I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work. ~Thomas Edison

Many of life’s failures are men who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. ~Thomas Edison

Nearly every man who develops an idea works at it up to the point where it looks impossible, and then gets discouraged. That’s not the place to become discouraged.  ~Thomas Edison

Failure isn’t the end.  You just need a little perspective shift.  Take a few minutes and watch this video from Honda about failure and success.

‘Failure’ is another way of saying try another way, look for other options, sometimes a reminder to be humble because you have to be when you pick yourself up, dust off your knees and keep going. Failure is definitely not an option. Love the statement in your post, Michelle, “If you aren’t failing, maybe you aren’t tackling big enough problems!”

Wonderful post and I love the video (And it’s message). Thanks so much for posting it here.

I forget where I heard it or I’d give it credit here, but failure is a temporary moment in time, quitting altogether is what makes it permanent.

One of my favorite books around this subject is by John Maxwell : Fail Forward.

Beautiful stuff. Thank you again. :)

Michelle – I could not agree with you more!
Failure is definitely not a sign that we should quit! Ever.
It is rather an opportunity for us to learn and a stepping stone toward our ultimate achievement.
I listened for years in seminars to people positioning failure as the opposite of success, and I just don’t believe that’s true. I believe that failure is actually part of the successful process.
Failure is not ever final, either.
Someone once said, “dare to fail greatly”. And the meaning was that by risking great failure, you were taking a shot at even greater success.
To me, the sign always says, “Keep going…you’re almost there”
    Thanks for a great post,

This is so so so good, thank you for sharing, some where I heard someone say “Quitters never win and Winners never quit” and that is the real bottom line of being a success. I must share this with others.
