Blasts from the Past

Since #blog30 has sent so many new readers to my blog I thought it’d be fun to do a post featuring some of what are the most popular posts from the past.  If you’ve only recently discovered my blog, here are some of my favorite and most popular articles that you may enjoy:

  • 10 Easy Ways to Get More Links to Your Website
  • How to Promote Your Business with a Customer Welcome Kit
  • Focus: Your Business Needs a Personal Ad
  • Bright Ideas to Keep Your Newsletter Interesting and More Bright Ideas
  • How to Take a “Sock” Day When You Work From Home

Do you have a favorite article or two from your blog’s “history”?  Please share it with me, and my blog readers in the comments!  You can also share more than one or two if you’d like (but be aware it’ll get your comment flagged for me to manually approve so you might not see it show up for a little while).

And with this post, I’ve completed both #blog30 and #mini7 challenges.  Yay!  Stay tuned for more posts from me in July (but maybe not quite 30).

Make a Difference… Go Get It…

This week I took the kids and flew to Anchorage (that’s the “big city” for us Alaskans) where we celebrated my Grandmother’s 80th birthday with her. She’s had a very long life and it was wonderful to spend some time together with so much of my extended family in one place.

Then I got the news yesterday that a wonderful lady I knew online had passed away. I’d known Denise Willms for years – she ghostwrote articles for me, helped me with press releases, and I did website design and hosting for her. She was a wonderful person, full of kindness and she always inspired me. I can hardly believe she’s gone.

It’s been one of those weeks where I realized that life is so unpredictable. We never know whether it’ll be 80 we make it to… or whether we’ll leave the world much sooner than seems fair.

Don’t Quit: Weekend Inspiration

If life or business has been a little tough lately, overwhelming or discouraging, this post is for you. There are ups and downs on the way to every goal. Know that you can succeed if you just keep on. Don’t give up! It’s worth hanging in there to reach the goals you’ve set.

10 Things You Can Do in 10 Minutes Each to Move Your Business Forward

I’m writing this from the airport at 7:03pm.  My goal is to be done at 7:13pm and schedule this post.  I’ve got 30 minutes until my plane boards and I can complete three small tasks to move my business forward.  Here are some ideas:

1. Write a quick blog post and promote it.

Jot down some random thoughts about something helpful for your readers.  Try a top ten list (like this one!) or top 5 list.  You can polish it later and use it as an article, in your newsletter, for a podcast, in a video, etc.  Take time to tweet your post and add it to your Facebook status.  If you’re using Networked Blogs, it will tweet/update for you.

If you feel overwhelmed at the thought of posting in 10 minutes, check out Michele Scism’s 10 minute blog post ideas: part one and part two.

2. Write a few thank you cards or emails.

Three Deadly Website Sins

If you’re serious about building a website that will attract your ideal clients, here are three “deadly sins” you need to be careful to avoid.

1. Allowing Your Ego to Make the Decisions

Is your website focused on YOU or on your customers?  Are you obsessed with “shiny objects” or bells and whistles? Is something not working but you don’t want to admit defeat and change it? OH NO!! Ego alert! Yeah, mine does that, too. Sometimes we’ve just got to tell that ego to sit down and shut up so we can make whatever changes we need to so that our websites can be effective.

Build Your Credibility and Reach More People on a Shoestring Budget

One of the most effective ways and low-cost ways to receive publicity for your website is to establish a relationship with the media.  Get to know your local news people (both online and offline!).  Find niche sites that cater to your target market and make yourself available to them as a resource for expert help (quotes, articles, etc.).  And get a media room setup on your website with press releases to share any big news about your business. Your business is more newsworthy than you probably realize!

Having a story published about you, being quoted as an expert source, or being referenced in an article, magazine or book is like a free endorsement of you, your website and your product.

Think about it.  We’re constantly bombarded with advertisements and promotions.  Do you believe everything you see on TV?  No, neither do my kids (it’s pretty interesting to hear my boys critique advertisements and their two cents on whether something would deliver on what’s shown in the ad).

That’s what our potential clients and buyers are thinking when they see our advertising and pitches — does it really work?  Sure, we can work on copywriting, improve our trust factor, and all that’s great, but there’s still that skepticism with paid advertising. [Read more...]

$5 – Entrepreneurial Thinking

Today I want to share a fantastic video from Stanford University’s Entrepreneurship Corner that offers a great look at how to think more like an entrepreneur.  (Thank you to Shel Horowitz for sharing this video with me.)

Thinking outside the box.  Changing the rules.  Not allowing yourself to be limited to by the “means” you’ve got.  Check it out.  Then think about the problems or challenges you’re facing in your business and try to look at them from a different perspective.

How to Share Your Brilliance Without Giving Away the Farm

You want to build your credibility and you want to help people, but need to make a living, too.  So how can you share your brilliance (or your products) without “giving away the farm” so to speak?

If you send out all your products as freebies you’ll lose time and money.  If you give away so much free advice and expertise that no one hires you, you’ve invested a lot of time with nothing in return.

Not to mention the fact that people tend to put less value on what they recieve for free and don’t put in as much effort to implement the suggestions or use the products.

So, what’s a gal in business to do? Here are three strategies:

How to Add an Amazon Widget to Your Blog

I’m an avid reader and love recommending books (and other resources) that have been helpful to me in my business.  Reading a good business books on a regular basis is a fantastic way to stay creative, grow your knowledge base and move forward with your business.

Do you enjoy business books?  Books related to your craft or area of expertise?

Last week I found a cool Amazon widget to add to my side bar.  It allowed me to easily create a “bookshelf” of business books I recommend.  I thought I’d share how I created and added it.
